Professional Standards

Shop Safety Framework.

Every maker is responsible for the safety of themselves and the community. Follow these protocols to ensure a safe creative environment.

The Golden Rule

If you don't know how to use a tool safely, DON'T USE IT. Ask a staff member or fellow maker for a demonstration. No project is worth an injury.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Eye Protection: ANSI Z87+ safety glasses must be worn at all times while in the workshop area.
  • Hearing Protection: Earplugs or earmuffs are required when using loud machinery (planners, saws, grinders).
  • Hand Protection: Wear appropriate gloves for welding or handling chemicals; never wear gloves near rotating machinery.
  • Footwear: Closed-toe shoes are required. No sandals or flip-flops allowed in the shop.
  • Clothing: Avoid loose-fitting clothes, dangling jewelry, and tie back long hair.

Machine Certification

All red-tagged and yellow-tagged machines require a proficiency checkout before use. You must attend a safety orientation and pass the specific machine class before operating specialized equipment like CNCs, Lathes, or Welding rigs.

Welding & Hot Work

  • Always use a welding screen to protect others from UV flash.
  • Ensure the ventilation system is active before striking an arc.
  • Keep flammable materials at least 35 feet away from hot work areas.
  • Check for a 'fire watch' after finishing any intensive cutting or welding.

Chemical Safety

Only use approved chemicals in designated areas. Read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before use. Dispose of rags and solvents in the fire-proof red cans only.

Shop Etiquette & Cleanliness

  • Clean as you go. Spend the last 15 minutes of your session returning tools to their designated shadows.
  • Scrap wood/metal goes in bins; everything else goes in the trash.
  • Sweep up dust and vacuum filters after using the wood shop.
  • Return every tool to its home. A 'lost' tool is a broken tool.

In Case of Emergency

Stop all work immediately and notify a staff member or call 911 if necessary.
